C. S. Jones / William Dale House
The house was constructed around 1870 by
Robert Barbour for local lawyer C.S. Jones;
he was mayor 1875-76 and was married to the daugher of Daniel McDougall who lived at
177 Church Street South.
He lived there until 1879 when he absconded with client funds that were never recovered.
He set up a new practice in the American West under a new name.
The house was bought by Dr John Sinclair who in 1911 sold it to his brother-in-law Wiliam Dale William Dale (1848-1921) who had taught at the University of Toronto, Queens and McMaster Universities.
Professor Dale was a 2-term mayor of St. Marys.

William Dale's firing from the University of Toronto led to a student strike that is detailed at
Q&A: What made the "blood fairly boil" in U of T student and future prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King in 1895?. Also a student at the time was
Arthur Meighen but he played little part in the strike
