John McDonald Block

From the heritage plaque:

"This fine limestone block was built by local retailer John McDonald sometime previous to 1859.   It boasts one of the earliest and best preserved store fronts in the town.   In addition it is on or near the site of the first log stores erected in the town, back in 1843.

In the 1800s the store was run most notably by G. B. Smith and later, for a time, by the White and May firm.   In the 1900's the store was known as 'Parsons Fair'.

This could be the longest continually operated retail building in St Marys."

This 2004 photo shows the building when it contained the offices of the local newspaper, which also sold office supplies.   The St Marys Journal Argus had previously been located at Eedy Buildings and before that at the Guest Block. 28 Dec 2007 the Journal Argus moved to 11 Wellington St N.

Designated a heritage property Oct 13, 1981.
