George B. McIntyre Store

From the commemorative plaque:
"Built circa 1854 this store is one of the earliest limestone commercial buildings in St Marys.   Constructed of coursed rubble with an attractive 1880's window structure, the structure is one of the few limestone buildings in St Marys that is still almost perfectly preserved."

George McIntyre was the town's third mayor 1868-9.  From this block he ran a boot and shoe business that employed about 20.  He was Chairman of the Building Committee responsible for constructing the Presbyterian Church in 1879-81.

His son Gilbert Howard McIntyre was mayor in 1892 and a Liberal member of parliament from 1904 to 1911. He was in the 4-man building committee that oversaw the construction the Town Hall.

The photo was taken in February 2005 just before Stonetown Bargains and Collectables moved into a store in the McPherson Block.

Remodelling of the interior was completed in the spring of 2006 becoming a Mexican restuarant, La Cueva.   After La Cueva closed, it became O'Neill's Pub and Restaurant, opening in December 2007.
