John Hugh Matthieson
The house was built on the south-west corner of Widder and Wellington Streets
for physician Dr. John Hugh Mathieson and his wife Mary Harrison in 1873 by
Robert Barbour.
On the opposite corner is the Robert Dickson house built in 1890.
The house was built the year before the
town hall in the same Romanesque Revival style.
As Dr. Mathieson was the chairman of the building commitee responsible for constructing the
town hall it is likely the Dickson house was influential in choosing the town hall design.
On the north-west corner of Widder and Wellington is the Presbyterian Church.
